Telewest were founded in 1984 as "Croydon Cable", and
became Telewest in 1992, after a joint venture of TCI and US West.
Telewest are best known as a major service provider of broadband,
digital tv channels and telephone services. While at it's peak,
Telewest's access plans were as follows,
- 256k broadband - £14.99
- 1mb broadband - £19.99
- 2mb broadband - £35.00
- 4mb broadband - £50.00
Telewest, in 2006, became a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.
The major problem the business had was debt, which was a result
from their huge investment into the infrastructure of their cable
television network. In the spring of 2006 it became necessary to
merge with NTL, another provider of cable television, to become
NTL:Telewest.
But, only a year later in 2007, the company was rebranded again
as Virgin Media Inc. The broadband services the company now offers
(2009) is a combination of NTL's cable-broadband,, Blueyonder (Telewest's)
cable-broadband operations and Virgin.net (ADSL access). With a
speed of 50mbps, in 2010, Virgin Media Inc can claim to be the fastest
broadband in England.
