Wanadoo was one of the UK's largest ISP's. It first began it's
incarnation as Freeserve, who were the first to offer free Internet
access in the UK. Users were only required to pay for the phone
bill, whereas before an access fee was also required. Freeserve
were a part of the Dixon's electrical group, but was sold to France
Télécom and rebranded Wanadoo in 2004.
Wanadoo operated as an ISP for a couple of years, and offered a
range of connection packages with unmetered access costing in the
region of £14.99. In 2006 the brand was rebranded to Orange
SA, who are a mobile phone operator also owned by France Télécom.
A single brand offering mobile telecoms and Internet services simplified
France Télécom's business and enabled them to increase
brand awareness.
Orange are currently the largest Internet Service Provider in Europe
(2009), with around nine million users.
