Baud is a term related to computing and telecommunications; most computer users will have seen it used in relation to modems. Specifically: it's the amount of times, per second, that a signal changes, and is measured in volts. Instead of referring to the 'baud', most Internet users will talk of the 'baud rate' their equipment has. The baud rate is measured in the number of 'times per second' that the carrier signal shifts value; however, due to the advent of broadband and increased download speeds, modems tend to be measured in bps 'bits per second' rather than in a 'baud rate'. Baud rate and bps should not be confused as the same thing; they are not interchangeable terms, and refer to different aspects of a telecommunications signal.
